Definition of extremism

Extremism is a complex phenomenon that manifests itself in different forms and contexts. It can be defined as …

an ideology or a set of beliefs and behaviors characterized by adherence to radical, extreme and often violent visions. Extremism can be political, religious, social or cultural in nature, and it can involve groups or individuals who take extreme positions outside the limits accepted by society. One of the central elements of extremism is ideological absolutism.

Types of extremism and their characteristics:

Political

It refers to radical ideologies that aim to fundamentally transform the political order. This can include far-left or far-right political movements, anarchism, and various forms of nationalism or separatism. Political extremists often reject the existing democratic systems and institutions, seeking to replace them with alternative structures.

Religious

It involves the radical interpretation of religious doctrines or beliefs, often leading to the justification of violence and intolerance. Religious extremists may seek to impose their religious views on others, reject secular governance, and engage in acts of terrorism in the name of their faith. Examples include jihadist extremism, religious fundamentalism, and religious separatism.

Ideological

It encompasses radical beliefs that go against societal norms and values but are not inherently linked to religion or politics. This can include extremist movements based on ideologies such as racism, white supremacy, ethnonationalism, or eco-terrorism. Ideological extremists seek to promote their worldview and may employ violence or illegal activities to further their cause.
