Populism and its rise in Europe
At the We-Europeans Online Event on 9 November 2022, Martin Mejstřík informed about populism and its rise in Europe.
There is no unified definition of populism but there are commonalities. One of the main ones is that populists try to divide society in two groups: „The people“ and „the elite“ or „the others“. Martin points out the connection between the rise of populism and a disfunction of the system as well as the decline of traditional political parties.

Besides his tasks as lecturer at Charles University, Martin Mejstřík is member in the Standing Group Extremism and Democracy, ECPR (European Consortium for Political Research) and organiser of the Prague Populism Conference. As team leader for the Czech Republic in the Horizon2020 project “DEMOS Democratic Efficacy and the Varieties of Populism in Europe” he, together with colleagues from 15 countries, investigated 17 populist parties and movements in Europe. In his research interest, he is focusing on current European populism in comparative perspective, Italian politics and on the transformation of the communist parties.
